59 Days to go - Atchoo!!!

Man-flu?

The last week has been written off. My wife has been ill for a bit longer but I finally caught a bit of her bug (whatever it is) and before I knew it, I was running a raging +38 degree C fever for 24 hours and felt like having the worst hangover ever.

However, all the fever and sickness probably have given me some advantages: been starved so I can do a bit of a carbo loading!

My first competitive run is this sunday: a 10K run; wish me luck!

Last distance run: 18 km
Duration: 90:01 minutes
Pace: 12.0km /hr
Total run so far: 216.0 km

68 days to go - Weekend running; slightly faster....

This is how it felt like!!!!

With limited time over the weekend, I took an alternative (and shorter) route. I actually forgot my shoes (twice) during the week so missed out on some crucial mid-week running but I was determined to make it up over the weekend. However, real life came over and bashed me over the head and I found some that I had to deal with other obligations.

Anyway, mindful of the time available I had less than two hours free so decided on a fast run - trying to knock up my pace if at all possible. I knew that I could knock off two large 'loops' in my usual running route. Each removed loop was around 2.0 km each so it would become approximately 18 km in length.

An odd distance for sure but it was what I wanted and away I went. I tried some more of the SIS Iso-gels, this time it was added caffeine in it and 5-10 minutes after ingesting it; I did feel a slight boost.....though it could have been a placebo effect?

78 Days to go - Wet feet and some

I am going to trial some of these energy gels and get used to the taste/texture/consuming-while-running as part of my prep work for the marathon. My past experience of 10K and half-marathons is that the water stops along the way (as well as an energy drink to begin with) is sufficient; however a bit of reading and research has thrown up some interesting bits of information. I am especially interested in 'hitting the wall', when the body has depleted it's store of useable glycogen and starts burning up fat instead. I actually don't know where my own level is but it's not before the half-marathon mark.

I suppose knowing this would be one more thing a seasoned marathon runner would know and they can then take mitigating steps. New to me, but second nature to seasoned runners.

Anway, I normally drink lucozade but been recommended to give the Science in Sport gels a crack and runner's world has some interesting reviews on these. Going to pack a couple for this weekend's run.

Today, I went out on the usual route - wetter than usual and parts of the canal tow-path are flooded so I hopped and skipped my way through some of the wetter parts. Oddly, I finished the route faster than I did this week: despite feeling it was slower.

Right, off to quafe some more lucozade!

Last distance run: 8.5 km
